In July 1960, at the age of 26, Jane Goodall traveled from England to what is now Tanzania, Africa and ventured into the little-known world of wild chimpanzees.
Equipped with little more than a notebook, binoculars, and her fascination with wildlife, Jane braved a realm of unknowns to give the world a remarkable window into humankind’s closest living relatives. Through more than 50 years of groundbreaking work, Dr. Jane has not only shown us the urgent need to protect chimpanzees from extinction; she has also redefined species conservation to include the needs of local people and the environment. Today she travels the world, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees and environmental crises, urging each of us to take action on behalf of all living things and the planet we share.
Dr. Jane believes that every individual can make a difference and that today’s young people are some of the most compassionate, creative, solutionaries our world has seen. She founded Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots in order to empower and encourage youth of all ages to pursue their passion, mobilize their peers, and become the leaders our world needs in order to ensure a better future for people, animals, and the environment.

About Roots & Shoots
Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall, it is a youth service program for young people of all ages. Our mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, other animals, and the environment.
Leaders from the playground to the boardroom hold the key to shaping the world. To make the world a better place, we have to change the way we make decisions. We need leaders who care about how their actions affect the world we all share.
Roots & Shoots empowers young people (like YOU) to become the type of leaders who will make right choices to build a better world. Through the program, youth lead local change through service while developing skills and traits of compassionate leaders.
Hundreds of thousands of Roots & Shoots members all over the world are working to improve their communities and be the kinds of leaders that our world needs. Together, the actions taken by each individual weave together to create a tapestry of hope…a powerful ripple of change.
